The Unknown Woman at the Guild Cinema
The Unknown Woman is directed by Diuseppe Tornatore, director of Cinema Paradiso.A mysterious Russian woman deliberately insinuates herself into the lives of a young, affluent Italian family, leading the demons of her horrific past to their doorstep. The Unknown Woman is an intricately constructed jigsaw puzzle that falls into place piece by piece to reveal a riveting tale of obsession, love and redemption. Masterfully balancing potent sensuality, harrowing suspense and heartfelt emotion, The Unknown Woman was named the Best Film of the Year by Italian critics and won five David di Donatello Awards (Italy’s version of the Oscar) for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Cinematography and Best Score (by master composer Ennio Morricone). The Unknown Woman is Italy’s selection this year for the Oscars. Russian film and television star Xenia Rappoport has received wide acclaim for her haunting portrayal of Irena, the Unknown Woman. In addition to winning the David, she was nominated for a European Film Award for Best Actress. Hailed by Variety as “one of the most deeply nuanced film portraits of a woman who has lived through the hell of human slavery” the breakthrough performance has catapulted the actress, already well-known in her home country, onto the international scene. 2008 - 118m - Italy - In Italian with English SubtitlesView a trailer here. Critter Tales: Yours, Mine, and Ours
There’s nothing as fun as winding people up and watching them go, so professional writer and artist Beth Surdut is facilitating a workshop at the Georgia O’Keeffe museum. Come join a round robin of your nature stories, where you will learn more about the humans telling the tales than then critters. Here’s a great opportunity to foster concise storytelling. Bring your wild critter stories-off the top of your head is just fine-and share them with neighbors who have lived in New Mexico forever or for just a little while. Surdut, aka Gator Girl, will assist you in telling a good tale for radio-short and sometimes not so sweet. For a few bites of the wild life, meander through her blog. There are gators and mermaids swimming through her stories Participants will write their stories, read them aloud, and hone them for radio. Fee $35; Members $26 (25% discount).
