SOUTHWEST ROOTS MUSIC PRESENTS
BEAUSOLEIL
avec Michael Doucet

DON’T MISS THE SPECIAL AFTER PARTY WITH
FELIX Y LOS GATOS

BeauSoleil is, quite simply, the most esteemed Cajun group on the planet. Fiddler Michael Doucet is well known for his mission to keep the unique southern Louisiana culture and music from extinction, but that hasn’t stopped his band from innovating. BeauSoleil continually spices its Cajun gumbo with elements of zydeco, New Orleans jazz, Tex-Mex, country and blues, keeping the music vital and contemporary. Doucet formed BeauSoleil in 1975 with Louisiana’s finest Cajun musicians. Their band name literally means “good sun” and is a reference to a fertile region in Nova Scotia where the band’s 17th-century, French-speaking ancestors lived prior to their migration to Louisiana, where they became “Cajuns.” Over the past three Grammy-studded decades, BeauSoleil has made nearly 30 albums that range from very traditional to experimental. www.rosebudus.com/beausoliel/ FELIX y LOS GATOSFelix y los Gatos has been rockin’ the southwest for over two years now. The band is made up of all star session musicians from the New Mexico blues and jazz scene. It all started when keyboardist Dave Barclay brought a button accordion to a blues jam. Since then a new fusion formed mixing zydeco, New Mexican rancheras and outlaw country with the improvisation of groovin’ jazz swing. www.myspace.com/felixylosgatos

ANDREW COLLBERG
Andrew Collberg turned 21 this year, his music shows a definite growth from the promising teenager to a self-confident artist. He has just finished recording 11 new tracks with Nick Luca who has been an engineer/producer/musician at Tucson’s own Wavelab Recording Studio for the past 10 years. Luca has worked with such notable artists as Devotchka, Neko Case, Iron and Wine, M Ward, Calexico, Robyn Hitchcock and Evan Dando, making him an integral part of some the most significant indie albums of the last decade. In Luca, Collberg has found a kindred spirit who immerses himself in the production process. The results of their collaboration are intense sessions that have produced his most distinguished recordings to date. Collberg’s new music has reached a certain maturity that comes from the desire to work at the songwriting and recording process. This is not an artist that is looking for overnight success, but one that wants to have a career of creating songs that are both special and potentially everlasting. With that work ethic in mind, the day may soon come where Andrew Collberg’s LPs are spinning on that same turntable that once only played his heroes, but for now Collberg is just excited to have begun that process.

The DAVID KURTZ BAND

Get there early! David wil be GIVING AWAY 50 copies of his great new CD Long Lonesome Journey at the show!
The David Kurtz Band incorporate the simplicity and vigor of early rock ‘n’ roll, the experimental spirit of late ’60s folk rock and psychedelia, the pop sensibilities of the ’70s and ’80s and the introspective country flavor of ’90s southwestern desert rock bands from the Sidewinders and Gin Blossoms to Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers. Hook-laden and soulful, the band move as freely across the eras as they do genres, leaving predictability in the dust and pure rock satisfaction in their wake. www.davidakurtz.com

BONNIE PRINCE BILLY

Will Oldham, a.k.a. Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy is an American singer, songwriter, and actor. WITH
WHITE MAGIC
PSYCHEDELIC / ZOUK / SOUL from NYC. “The 12 songs on their full-length debut, Dat Rosa Mel Apibus, are still rooted in abrasively plunk piano keys and throaty dirge, but they flush out the EP’s elements, adding flecks of blue to its flame. And the cover is outta control cool, all tripped out with twinkly gold leaf pentagrams. Really beautiful.” —DANIEL ARNOLD, SPIN MAGAZINE

KIM & the CABALLEROS

Kim says: “My mom force fed old country (we’re talkin’ Loretta, Cash, Waylon, Willie and the boys) to me at an early age, and I rebelled, first playing bass in an 80s rock band, “The Bohiems”, later becoming a folkie, still leaning in the rock genre, but mostly writing tortured love songs and political/social stuff in the band “Burning Joan.” For giggles, in 2003 I recorded a bastardized version of “Blue Eyes Cryin’ in the Rain” for my mom’s birthday, and it all took off from there. I realized my roots had caught up to me and I liked it. We recordered the CD Blue Hearted Girl at Howlin’ Dog Studios in Alamosa, Co. and in Nashville. I live in Taos, New Mexico with my children; work with homeless youth at the DreamTree Project; garden; ride my horse, Nugget, up in the mountains (just like the song says); and sing big ‘ol twangy country every chance I get.”
